Harvesting Method:

Blast fishing, Hook and line, Traps and pots, Gill nets.

Features:
Adult Humphead wrasse have a relatively deep body, a rounded caudal fin and a pronounced fleshy lump above their eyes. The fish is green with wavy lines on the body and two lines behind both eyes. It is the largest species in the wrasse family, growing to 2.3m in length and 190kg.

Threats:
Humphead wrasse are a popular fish for the live fish trade and sell for around RM700 per kilo. Due to this popularity they have been fished so intensely that populations have been decimated and now only two successful breeding populations remain in the whole of Malaysia. A species which was once widespread throughout the region is likely to become extinct throughout Southeast Asia within the next two decades.
Conservation Status: Endangered
