Threats:
Sharks are becoming endangered as a result of the shark fining trade in which shark fins are extracted from live sharks for use in the renowned Chinese delicacy sharksfin soup. Around 73 million sharks are caught each year, definned and then tossed back to the oceans to die.
As a result over 30 species of shark are now listed by the IUCN as threatened or endangered. Sharks are particularly vulnerable to overfishing as they are slow growing and produce few young.
Over the last 15 years many shark populations have declined by up to 80%.
Widespread extinctions have been predicted in the next 10 or 20 years if the current rate of population decline continues.
