Seafood Info: Clams

Epinephelus tauvina (Forsskål, 1775)

Harvesting Method:

Clam farming is the most common method with 89% of world consumption of clams being farmed. They are cultured on the seafloor and generally hand harvested which doesn't impact on the environment. Occasionally they are harvested by dredging which can disrupt the seabed, however the effects are typically short lived and can be restored.

Features:
Clam shells are an oval triangular shape with a smooth surface and deep brown or yellow in colour on the outside. The outer shell also bears ridges radiating out. The inside of the shells are porcelain white in colour.

Conservation Status: Good
Local Name: Kerang

Current Situation:
Farmed clam production is well-managed and has a low impact on the environment. As with oysters, mussels and other bivalves, these filter-feeders can actually have a positive benefit by clearing tiny particles and debris from the surrounding water.
