Seafood Info: Farmed Grouper

Epinephelus tauvina (Forsskål, 1775)

Harvesting Method:

Current grouper culture is rather advanced, mostly by inland pond, cage culture, and indoor intensive culture.

Features:
Oval-shaped and lateral compressed, blunt body. Big mouth, thick lips. Color light tanned, whitish belly with 5 tilting white-dotted brown strips. Dark and white spots on head and lateral sides. Round caudal fin. If all the grouper on display are of a similar size, it's likely that they have been farmed. But always ask before you buy.
Plectropomus Leopardus (Lacepe,1802)

Current Situation
Parasites are the major concern in grouper culture industry. Consumers may become concerned about the drugs used in their treatment being left over on the fish after harvest.
