Seafood Info: Farmed Snapper

Harvesting Method:

Farming, commonly in sea cages.

Features:
Deep body, long pectoral fins, truncate caudal fin and continuous dorsal fins. Posses a large head with small red eyes and a pointed snout. The main farmed species is Red Snapper, given this name due to it's crimson red colouration which fades from a darker back to a light underside.

Conservation Status: Good
Local Name: Ikan Merah

Current Situation
Farmed snapper is a much better seafood option as it meets the demand for seafood whilst reducing the pressure on wild fish numbers. However the environmental issues related to this type of farming is increased nutrient and pollution levels around the farming cages due to waste from the fishes. A further issue is the feed which can include fresh fish, possibly adding to overfishing problems with other fisheries
